When and How It Happened 37 House has always been a diary of the marriage of lead singer Erin Sydney and guitarist Jeremy Rosenblum. Started as a way to cope with entering quarantine four months after their wedding, the music has become a constant expression of the love and pain they experience together. When and How It Happened is the next chapter in that story: written over 18 months about the process of learning how to be, and not be, polyamorous in the development of a marriage.
The songs were written as events unfolded and capture the raw emotions of deeply personal moments. Neither person knew how this would end when it was written. Helium, about a few days spent with a girlfriend and a few months of dealing with the feelings that created, captures that anguish and sadness. The album’s opening track, Shadow Puppets, sings of apology, confession, and the resignation of hope, while maintaining a fierce undercurrent of unconditional love. The acoustic tracks Unloveable and Love Song counter each other; one a song about the darkest moments, the other an expression of the endless love to hold on to when things seem overwhelming. This album also marks the first time Erin Sydney has written songs on an album, and Event Horizon and Only a Smile Remains give voice to her struggles, pain, and ability to grow through it all.
When it came time to record, the band decided it had to be as raw and urgent as the songwriting. Renting a house in the mountains of Colorado, they set up a live band and recorded all the instrumental parts in just 4 days. The recording captures exactly what happened between the band members in a whirlwind of creative expression. It's a loving tribute to the early days of rock and roll, favoring amps and feel over perfectly placed hits and polished layers. And because 37 Houses is always a product of the home Erin and Jeremy share, the vocals and acoustic recordings were again recorded in their bedroom.
This is an album about the discrete moment and how you deal with it. This is an album that captures a discrete moment in the band's history. This is how it happened, when and how.
