Formed in Michigan in 2020 by Jared Jordan (bass) and Casey Rowe (drums, vocals), the band expanded in 2021 with the addition of guitarist Earl Mudd. That same year, they recorded their first release, introducing their sound with the live EP “Live at Dogtown”, tracked at Dogtown Studios in Grand Rapids, before establishing a steady live presence in Detroit. In October 2022, they began work on their debut full-length album and after nearly two years of continued live activity “Superstition Plagues the Purity of All” saw its release. The following year Carbon Decoy spent touring the Midwest while writing material for what would become their second album “Crush the Sun”, recorded at the end of 2024.

Rooted in stoner and doom yet shaped by garage immediacy and psychedelic texture, “Crush the Sun” continues the band’s commitment to groove-driven heaviness and unvarnished production. Bass and drums lock into dense, mechanical rhythms while saturated guitars cut through with abrasive clarity. The arrangements remain compact, allowing the atmosphere to build without losing structural focus.

Opening track “The Trip” establishes the album’s direct approach, pairing driving momentum with a thick, 70s-leaning groove. “Castle East” slows the pace, centered on a repetitive, weighty riff that underscores the band’s doom foundation. “Heavy Weight” highlights the trio’s sense of movement, balancing hypnotic repetition with tightly controlled dynamics.

Throughout the record, the band shifts from dense lysergic passages into darker, heavier doom sections – and back again to acid-tinged textures. These psychedelic accents serve as a unifying thread, keeping the material grounded even as tempos and moods fluctuate. The closing track, “Ghost Town,” brings the album to an energetic finish that reinforces Carbon Decoy’s direct, live-oriented approach. With “Crush the Sun”, Carbon Decoy remain firmly anchored in the sound they have cultivated since their formation – a Rust Belt heaviness defined by groove, repetition, and a commitment to live intensity.
