Electric Valley Records presents Brazilian prog/stoner quartet Gods & Punks’ upcoming sixth full-length, A Shrine by the Sea, scheduled for July 3rd on vinyl and across digital/streaming platforms.
Gods & Punks was formed in Rio de Janeiro in 2013 by brothers Alexandre and Pedro Canhetti. Out of their passion for stoner rock, they took the band name from a Monster Magnet song. Beginning with the heavy riffage of Black Sabbath and the intricate melodies of Rush as their primary influences, Gods & Punks later emerged as a beacon of exploration, unceasingly embracing a palette of ideas and elements, often kaleidoscopic, often bleak, but always loaded with psychedelic heaviness.
In 2017, Gods & Punks unleashed their debut full-length, Into the Dunes of Doom, signaling a shift towards a more progressive sound compared to their 2016 EP, The Sounds of Earth. This album marked the beginning of their epic “Voyage Series,” a musical saga interwoven throughout their first four albums each adding a new chapter to an ongoing otherworldly tale. They continued the chronicle with the next three albums: Enter the Ceremony of Damnation (2018), And the Celestial Ascension (2019), and The Sounds of the Universe (2021). As their sound expanded on each record, so did their acclaim from critics and listeners alike.
During the tumultuous times of the COVID-19 pandemic, they released the acoustic EP Different Dimensions (2020) as a charity project, with proceeds going to support struggling Brazilian families.
After releasing The Sounds of the Universe (2021), the fourth and final album in the Voyage Series, the band went on an indefinite hiatus — though not for long. Alexandre and Pedro put together a new lineup, returned with the EP Mountains of Garbage in 2024, and released their fifth album, Death, the same year via Electric Valley Records. That album tells the story of frontman Alexandre’s harrowing near-death experience in 2021. The band kept the momentum going with the EP Holograms in 2025.
An ode to the sea, the upcoming album, A Shrine by the Sea, features two extended compositions, each running 21 minutes and 12 seconds. “The Lighthouse” (Side A) traverses a wide dynamic range, moving between atmospheric sections, slow doom passages, and Sabbath-inspired riffs. The track also features guest vocals by Andrea Ruocco (ex–Spiral Guru). “Poseidon” (Side B) takes a more fluid and psychedelic approach, with a calmer tone that gradually builds intensity while maintaining a strong sense of space and immersion.
Written and arranged remotely, the recording followed the band’s established workflow: guitars and drums tracked in Rio de Janeiro by Rodrigo and Gabriel, bass recorded by Pedro in Santos, and vocals performed by Alexandre in Paris, France. The album was mixed and mastered by Andre Leal and Kleber Mariano at Studio Jukebox (Volta Redonda, Brazil), resuming the collaboration established on the band’s previous album, Death, while the album cover was created by vocalist Alexandre C.
