You may know Tim Shaw from other projects, but eight days ago he released the second album, The Free Man, under the project name Fyrdsman. The album explores the timeless, the mythic, and the personal through black metal, telling the story of a rebel facing the harsh reality of post-1066 England as he moves through terror, loss, alienation, and a desire for revenge, driven by visions and apparitions.

The album also features drumming by Ian Finley, for studio sessions only, known for his work with Nemorous, Vacivus, and formerly Wodensthrone.

The Free Man is a narrative-driven atmospheric black metal album that moves through shifting emotional terrain, balancing light and shade across its runtime.

Built around evolving textures, melodic undercurrents, and immersive ambience, The Free Man traces a loose conceptual arc of the rebel grappling with the reality of post-1066 England, experiencing terror, loss, alienation and a burning desire for revenge, spurred on by visions and apparitions, but without relying on explicit storytelling. The result is an introspective, atmospheric journey that sits comfortably within the genre while carving out its own space.
