Dutch band 22AD opens a new chapter for the European stoner grunge scene with the release of their long-awaited EP See the World. Combining gritty grunge with heavy stoner rock grooves, the band presents a sound that is both nostalgic and modern.
A Wall of Sound from the Netherlands
Since their formation, 22AD has built a reputation as a band unafraid to push the boundaries of the genre. Their sound is a tribute to the raw energy of the '90s – think of the intensity of Alice in Chains and the layering of Soundgarden – interwoven with the hypnotic, desert-like riffs of bands like Kyuss and Queens of the Stone Age. The result is a sonic sledgehammer: melodic, dark, and unflinchingly heavy.
World-Class Production
For the creation of See the World, 22AD left nothing to chance. The EP was recorded at the Far Out Sound Studio in Rotterdam, under the guidance of producer and mixing engineer Niek van den Driesschen (Baardvader). The international caliber of the release is underlined by the involvement of Karl Daniel Lidén. Lidén is known for his work with heavyweights from the European scene such as Greenleaf, Lowrider, and Crippled Black Phoenix. His mastering ensures the EP possesses that specific, thundering 'low-end' that is essential for the modern stoner sound. The artwork was provided by the internationally acclaimed artist Young & Sick, who previously delivered iconic work for big names like Foster the People, Maroon 5, and The Velvet Teen.
Urgency and Ambition
The release of See the World comes at a crucial time. In an era where music is often polished and predictable, 22AD brings back the much-needed rawness. The songs explore themes of escape and confrontation: “With ‘See the World’ we wanted to create a record that forces you to stop and listen,” says singer and guitarist Dirk Krijgsman. “It is an invitation to see the world through our eyes: unfiltered, loud, and honest.” See the World will be presented on Saturday, April 4th at Stonergrungefest in De Helling in Utrecht, the Netherlands, where The Machine and Samavayo will also perform. On Friday, April 3rd, 22AD will play at Doornroosje Nijmegen, the Netherlands with Elephant Tree.
