As the title suggests, it’s written as a portrait, a descent into the human abyss, and the long climb back out. The songs carry anger and restlessness, with lyrics that lean dark and melancholic, but each one leaves room for hope and rebirth. The core message is simple: you can get back up, even from the bottom.
We chose this name because we wanted to explicitly convey, through an "artistic" route, the dualism of our music. We found the references for what we were looking for in the thoughts of the Belgian painter René Magritte and in a novel by Oscar Wilde. The name we chose is essentially a metaphor and an extreme synthesis of what we would like to be musically. In his works, Magritte wants to allude to everything as a mystery without defining it. In our lyrics and our music, we try to recount and express emotions, but we would like to leave the interpretation open to the listener. We would like each person, based on their own life experiences, to be able to "live" their own story, create their own images, and give an extremely personal meaning. This concept, in a certain sense, brings us closer to the painter’s concept, and we decided to choose the name of Magritte's mother, "Adeline," as the first part of the band's name, because her story, although sad and mysterious (she died by suicide drowing in the river Sambre), was fundamental for the development of his style, his message, and the creation of his works. The second part of the name "Gray" comes to life from the character of Dorian Gray.
The protagonist of Oscar Wilde's novel is a young man who goes so far as to make a pact with the devil so as not to lose his magnificent appearance. His beauty is something captivating; it is grace and charm. We like to associate this side of him with the more melodic and introspective parts of our songs. On the other hand, and in opposition to it, there’s the painful, dark, and melancholic part of his personality and his soul. For us, this represents the other side of our being. It represents the rougher, harder and more violent parts of our sound as a band.
As the title itself suggests, this work aims to be a kind of portrait. The portrait of a descent into the human abyss, but also of the arduous climb back out of it. It is a work that portrays us, portrays a snapshot of our lives, our emotions, the desire to breathe again even when we are scraping the bottom. With our music and our words, we delve into the feelings and the real emotional storms of our being. We trace the inner conflict with what tends to undermine our stability, sometimes hitting us from the outside and sometimes from within. We express the contradictions of our mind, the fights against ourselves, and we try to describe what is intended, as the search for an inner peace that sometimes seems impossible to reach. The songs convey anger and restlessness; the lyrics are often dark and melancholic, but a fundamental thing is that in each of them we always find words of hope and rebirth. And this is the message we would like to convey. You can get back up even when you are crawling on the bottom. There is always a light to glimpse, even in the deepest darkness.
